Support

Simon Callow and Catherine Russell cut 90th birthday cake

We thank the many and varied people and organisations who have joined our campaign, donated, and spread the word of our aims widely around the local community, local businesses, local organisations and the arts, culture and entertainment industries.

This support could be due to an interest in community, in the arts and culture, the local area, in heritage, or a nostalgic connection. And/or a vision of rejuvenating and regenerating for the future, and perhaps as a potential user of the revived building.

You can help too:

  • join us, along with 1,275 other members and associates;
  • add your name/organisation to our supporters lists below;
  • come along to our events;
  • volunteer your time, skills and experience to the campaign;
  • donate money, services and products;
  • tell us how you would use a rejuvenated building;
  • spread the word about our campaign around your family, friends, colleagues and other contacts.

Patrons

We are pleased to have the support of our fabulous Patrons, who live (or have lived) in Streatham or the South London area, so have an affinity with our close local community and its creativeness.

  • Akram Khan, MBE. Dancer, Choreographer & Director, Akram Khan Company

    ‘ Streatham Hill Theatre has such an amazing history of dance - to think that the likes of Margot Fonteyn, Alicia Markova, Anna Pavlova, Anton Dolin and Michael Somes all performed there! It would be so wonderful to be able to light up its stage again with the world of contemporary dance and other dance genres.’

  • Baroness Floella Benjamin, OM, DBE, DL. Actress, Writer, Campaigner & Politician

    'This magnificent building is sitting unused but not unloved. I’m delighted to support the Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre in their campaign to reawaken it.’

  • Catherine Russell. Actress

    'A fully open Streatham Hill Theatre would be an amazing asset to South London. I’m proud to stand with the Friends campaign to give it back to the community. ’

  • David Harewood, MBE. Actor, Director, Presenter and Author

    ‘Theatre and the Creative Arts are so important for people’s well-being, which is just one of the reasons I’m fully behind the Friends’ campaign to bring this very special building back to life as a beating heart for our wonderful Streatham community and beyond.’

  • Jessica Thom. Theatre-Maker, Comedian & Co-Founder of Touretteshero

    ‘I spend my life challenging people to think differently, and build a more inclusive society, and would love to see the Streatham Hill Theatre brought back to life as an inclusive venue for all to enjoy.’

  • Jools Holland, OBE, DL. Pianist, Composer, Bandleader, Singer and Broadcaster

    ‘The prospect of bringing back to life a theatre in South London, with a stage the equivalent size of the Palladium, is very exciting. My friend the late Chris Barber and his jazz band played there in the fifties, and it would be so wonderful to see the Streatham Hill Theatre filled with all kinds of music once again. I'm delighted to add my support to this important campaign to save it.'

  • Paul Merton. Comedian, Improviser, Writer & Presenter

    'Such an amazing array of stars played at the Streatham Hill Theatre back in the day. It would be wonderful to see this beautiful theatre brought back to life so we could enjoy watching the next generation of performers tread its boards.’

  • Renato Balsadonna. Opera & Symphonic Conductor

    ‘I am thrilled to support this project to breathe new life into Streatham’s Sleeping Beauty, which will also revitalise the arts and culture in Streatham.’

  • Robert Glenister. Actor

    ‘I applaud the Friends’ campaign to bring this wonderful theatre back to life and help make Streatham the place to visit for creative entertainment, as it used to be many years ago.’

  • Samira Ahmed. Arts & News Presenter and Theatres Trust Ambassador

    'Opening up Streatham Hill Theatre to the public again would be truly exciting. What could be a finer community asset than this building?'

  • Simon Callow, CBE. Actor, Writer & Director

    'All sorts of marvellous things can be done with this magnificent building, ranging from the epic to the intimate, as long as its essential and unique character is preserved, because that’s why we love it so.’

  • Sir Mark Rylance. Actor, Theatre Director & Playwright

    ‘ I live very happily in South London as did my grandfather and great grandfather before me. I totally support the amazing efforts of the Friends to reuse this gem of a building for the community as an arts and creative hub.’
