Feasibility Workshop

Friends Action Meeting

The Friends met to discuss and agree how to respond to Beacon Bingo’s appeal to Lambeth Council to revoke the Asset of Community Value (ACV) status granted to Streatham Hill Theatre. David Harvey (Chair of the Friends) gave a brief history of the theatre and overview of what has happened to date, then the group split into two with one group looking at how we should respond to Lambeth Council (who have shared the details of the appeal with us to give us an opportunity to respond) and the other group focusing on how we can grow our numbers and continue to gather support for our campaign.

Owners appeal against ACV status

Today, 5th September 2018, The Friends have been told that owners have submitted a request for a review of the ACV status. We will respond in due course.

Streatham Hill’s Sleeping Beauty: Friends seek to revive unique 1920s theatre

There is a ‘sleeping beauty’ waiting to be awoken in Streatham, South London. A unique gem, a lavish Grade 2 listed theatre, designed and built in the late 1920’s for an audience of over 2500 with a stage large enough to take the very biggest shows. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity – and maybe the very last chance – to revive the Streatham Hill Theatre.

The So & So Arts Club have announced that they are sadly leaving their pop-up venue in Streatham Hill Theatre:

“So, the big news this month is that we have sadly parted ways with So & So Streatham. We always knew it was going to be a short-term thing, but it turned out to be slightly shorter than anticipated. We’re very sad to let this beautiful grand old theatre slip through our fingers…”

Women & War Arts Festival – July 2017

The So and So Arts Club is proud to present the Women and War: Exodus festival  at the beautiful Streatham Hill Theatre, where we hope to one day find a more permanent home. The festival runs from July 3rd-30th in two pop up venues, the ABOVE and BELOW where we will be screening films, exhibiting photos and pictures and producing theatre and music. We look forward to welcoming you there in our friendly and very reasonably priced bar.

Festival Director Sarah Berger said:

“This year’s Women and War Festival, EXODUS, is a celebratory tribute to the resourcefulness and courage of women from across the world who have found themselves displaced because of war.

“At a time when the rights of women are under attack as much – if not more – than ever, we will unite our voices with theirs. Any of those women could be your mother, your sister, your daughter, or you. It is not a story of them; it is a story of us.”

There will be circus, readings, plays and seminars across the festival with specific events dedicated to Afghanistan, the charities and individuals who work with refugees both in Streatham itself and across the world.

Beacon Bingo announcement: January 2017

Beacon Bingo has announced today an opportunity to work with businesses to replace Beacon Bingo at Streatham Hill Theatre. Beacon Bingo Streatham Hill, part of the Praesepe group of companies, has offered Bingo to its customers for over 50 years and was formerly known as Streatham Hill Theatre which opened in the 1920s. At one time in the 1960’s the venue was the largest Bingo Club in London. Prior to the club offering Bingo it operated for forty years as one of the largest theatres outside the West End and still has many of the original features from its Theatre days.

Recently a ‘Open House’ night was held at the Club, VIP guests were given guided tours of the building and after the Bingo session a short play was performed for an audience of 200 people (written by Craig White, General Manager) which served to demonstrate the fantastic acoustics in the main
auditorium.

Nick Harding, CEO of Praesepe said: “The outstanding contribution of all staff and management at this club for over 50 years has enabled us to provide a great service to the local community. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the Bingo club has recently started to make a trading loss and we have to move on with other plans for the building”.

Nick continued: “ We have now decided to scale back our traditional Bingo offer in the Club but will continue to provide a form of electronic bingo in a smaller area behind the main foyer. Having surveyed other potential uses for the Theatre we are planning now to seek a commercial partner who would be interested in reopening the beautiful Cocktail bar at first floor, we will also reopen three floors of offices at the rear of the building and of course we would very much like to work with a theatre group who might be interested in reviving what is an historic theatre. I am personally determined to breathe life back into this magnificent building alongside all the other exciting building and residential projects currently taking place in Streatham and will be prepared to be as helpful as I possibly can to any organisation that wishes to talk to us”.
