Gielgud in another of the 1930’s great performances

In w/b 27th April 1936 Gielgud was to return in another of the decade’s great performances, that of Romeo in Romeo & Juliet. At the original production at the New Theatre, acting honours were shared with Laurence Olivier, and nightly they alternated the roles of Romeo and Mercutio. At Streatham Hill, we had just Gielgud for Peggy Ashcroft to give her undivided attention.

Of the major stars of the period, Olivier was the only notable exception never to play at Streatham Hill.
